Cleaning Showers

How do I clean my filthy shower?

Soap, body fats, sunblock and body lotion residues are the primary cause of most shower soiling issues. These residues are greasy and build up easily over a relatively short period of time, in the case of a very dirty shower there in no alternative to a heavy-duty degreaser such as Zap, Break Up, or Foaming Bathroom Cleaner and a scrubbing brush.

Once clean, any of these products can be further diluted as maintenance cleaner, or a proprietary brand such as Mr Muscle, or Shower Duck used frequently will keep the shower clean.

Moulds and fungi should also be tackled at this point using either a strong disinfectant or a bleach-based product.

** Handy Hint **

When showers are completed, squeegee all water off walls and doors with a window squeegee.

Water Spot Removal

What can I do about water spots on glass?

Water spotting is generally caused by lime suspended in water, being left behind when a water droplet evaporates. Lime will bond to many surfaces effectively, then attract more lime molecules causing a build up, seen to great effect in kettles and dishwashers.

The most common method for removing water spots from windows is by using a mildly abrasive paste such as, Ettore Water Spot Remover. It is used in a similar fashion to car polish – applied with a soft damp cloth and then buffed off.

In dishwashers, kettles, etc liquids such as Lime Away or Scale Away are used, please contact us for advice using these products.

Vacuum Cleaner Problems

Why has my vacuum cleaner stopped sucking properly?

Vacuum cleaner maintenance (or rather a lack of it !) is the usual cause of suction loss, the most likely causes are:

1. Full dust bag

2. Physical blockage, usually in the hose or elbows.

3. Reusable dust bag airflow reduced. Dust bags require regular cleaning, the most effective method is to vacuum the material with another vacuum or with a paper bag in your own vacuum cleaner. NEVER wash a reusable dust bag.

4. Vacuum foot worn and not able to create suction onto floor surface.

5. Mechanical failure such as loss of fan blades or motor running slowly.

Graffiti Removal

What can I use to remove graffiti?

Graffiti comes in many types - for the most efficient removal, ensure the surface is able to cope with the chemical you have on your shelf - ie: water based paints will be removed by heavy duty solvents and paint stripper based products.

Products stocked by Christchurch Cleaning Supplies for graffiti removal are - Vanish, Graffiti Wipes, Trichloroethelene, and Acetone.

** Handy Hint **

To identify if paint is water based, use a little methylated spirits on a cloth and rub the painted surface lightly - if the paint colour appears on the cloth, the paint is water based.

Reappearing Carpet Stains

Why do stains "reappear" in carpet when they have been cleaned?

A "reappearing " stain is actually a new stain. If the orginal spot was removed, the carpet was, at that point ,clean. The new stain is soiling attracted to the carpet fibres by residual cleaning chemical. Treat the stain with a generic stain remover, then throughly wet the area with clean water and either blot dry or extract with a wet vacuum.

Floor Polishing

How can I get a good finish on my floor?

Floor polish is a polymer-based finish designed to enhance and protect resilient and hard floors such as vinyl, linoleum, terrazzo, and slate. Surface identification is very important, both before stripping with a commercial stripper, and with the use of the correct products for all applications afterwards.

The most common flooring materials to cause confusion are vinyl and linoleum. In general terms, commercial vinyl has the colour and pattern all the way through to the base and also has welded joins. Domestic vinyl has a foam backing, and linoleum has a string or scrim backing.

Solvent based strippers can be used on vinyl and stone floors, but must not be used on linoleum due to the bitumen base of this flooring. Solvents can melt or bleed the colour from linoleum.

These products are simple to use and apply – an analogy used in the cleaning industry is that applying floor polish products is similar to applying varnish to wood, and indeed the same rules apply to both.

For a professional long lasting look, the following ingredients are required:

  • Close attention to cleanliness of both the surface and applicators
  • Good surface preparation
  • Even application
  • Allow coats to cure before the applying subsequent coats
  • Temperature when applying
  • Correct cleaning process during the life of the polish.

Polishes should only be cleaned with neutral ph cleaners at the correct dilution rates, and using only cold or warm water. In commercial applications a buffer or polishing machine is normally utilized to restore the level of gloss and integrity of the coat of polish by removing scratch marks and blemishes. Again cleanliness of the floor and buffing pads before buffing are critical to the final result.
